MATCH REPORTS
THE 2004 SEASON SO FAR . . .
SAMURAI RUN BROKEN IN
AMSTERDAM
The Samurai’s impressive run was broken in Amsterdam as they were
beaten 19 – 15 by the Corso Marauders team that included a large
contingent of British Army 7s players. In a game that should have
been the final, the Samurai’s failed to recover from 2 early
Marauders tries from the impressive Damu Damu.
With Ben Lewitt, Jim Jenner, Russell Earnshaw, John Skurr, Ed
Burrill and Andy Carter all unavailable for Samurai selection the
team had a few unfamiliar faces in their ranks. However newcomers
Rob Hoadley and Alan Madonye performed well throughout.
In the Sunday pool games Samurai disposed of Pacific Coast
Grizzlies, West Indies and Millfield Old Boys with relative ease
but were unfortunately rewarded with the tough side of the draw as
they had to face the Corso Marauders.
Samurai now move on to Rome and Cayman looking to add to their
already impressive season.

FIRST OF MANY FOR LADIES 7
?
Samurai International R.F.C. have become the first International
Invitation 7s team to add a Ladies Team to the club. Womans Rugby
was given a great boost as the Samurai team took the Sofia 7s
tournament by storm. It is hoped that the team will be able to
continue to enter many more tournaments over the next few years.
Samurai Ladies 7s win first
tournament
The Samurai Ladies 7's team returned
from their debut tournament as winners. The team, shadowing the
equally successful mens team, went through the entire tournament
without a single point being scored against them.
Coached by Nigel Brook-Walters (Wasps), Andrew Willett (Australian
7's) and Colin Hillman (Welsh 7's coach) the Samurai Ladies beat
the Bulgarian National Team 57 - o in the final.
Throughout the tournament the team played with such style and
skill that the girls would have been more than a match for many of
the mens team competing in Bulgaria.
Sally Wise, captain of Samurai Ladies, was delighted with the
result. "It really was a great perfomance from the girls given the
minimum time available to prepare together.
It is particularly pleasing after the support shown to us by
sponsors Samurai, Gerrard and ULR. The whole squad is really
looking forward to our next competition".

SAMURAI SHARKS PERFORM
The Samurai development team ‘the Sharks’ performed admirably as
they entered the North Riding Scarborough 7s. Captained by
Wakefield’s Jon Skurr a mixture of old heads and debutant
youngsters, blended well under the guidance of the new Gloucester
Academy Coach Mark Hewitt.
Baz Hocking, Ben Wickens and Martin Olima all Academy youngsters
made their debut’s for the Samurai Sharks team, who ran the very
experienced White Hart Marauders side close. Losing the semi final
by 17 points to 7. Samurai’s try was scored by Baz Hocking who put
in a fine performance.
The Sharks went on to take 3rd place beating Bristol University in
the play off.
The Sharks v Marauders game should have perhaps been the final as
the Marauders went on to win the final by a big margin against the
Crusaders.

Hong Tens 2004
The Samurai team, in only their 2nd ever 10s tournament were again beaten
at the semi-final stage of this tough competition.
In the pool games they disposed of Glenmorangie Black Watch Fijians,
Pacific Coast Grizzlies, Chinese Universities and the Irish Vikings.
All of the pool games were highly competitive as is the norm at this high
standard tournament.
A last minute call off from Australian 7s Fly half Tim Walshe did not help
the Samurai cause, but when Queensland Reds and a Super 12 Contract came
calling, the answer was never going to be No.
The Samurai Semi Final against favourites NZ Metro was a very physical
affair.
The appointment of a New Zealand referee for this match was perhaps a
little unfair and he struggled to take control of the game in the correct
manner.
The contact area became a lottery and this eventually culminated in some
very dubious decisions. The game deteriorated rapidly and the large
supportive crowd could not believe some of the referee’s decisions against
the Samurai team.
Lewitt and Powell of the Samurai spent time in the Sin Bin and with less
than a minute left Brent Wilson finally got his marching orders with a Red
Card. The card came much to late and Metro ran out winners by 15 points to
Nil.
The 2nd consecutive semi final defeat, but a defeat with honour as the
Samurai again became the highest placed Notrhern Hemisphere team in the
competition.
Team;
John Devereaux – Swansea / Ben Lewitt – Orrell.
Gerrie Engelbrecht and Francois Hoffman – Blue Bulls.
Andy Powell – Celtic Warriors / Jim Jenner – Worcester.
Kingsley Jones – Pontypridd / Kramer Ronaki – Bedford.
Dan Connelley – London Welsh / Chris Yates – Worcester.
Chris Macdonald – Bridgend / Jon Boden – Rugby Lions.
Ed Burrill – Wasps / Simon Hunt – Perpignan /
John Carter – Doncaster.
Coach = Colin Hillman. Manager
= Terry Sands. Physio = Ian Horslet.

3
FROM 3 AS THE SEASON STARTS
The Samurai season has started unbelievably well as the team can boast 3
wins in succession.
The first tournament in April was in Bournemouth at the Oakmedians 7s
where the team beat a well drilled Bristol University side in a tense
final. Tristan Prosser-Shaw had an outstanding tournament for the Samurai
with newcomers James Whittingham, and Andy Carter making great debuts.
The Spitfire 7s in Canterbury was the first time the team had played in
this tournament and they again ran out worthy winners, beating home side
Canterbury
57 – 0 in the final. However they had to survive a tense semi final
against APACHE first, where the game went to sudden death extra time
before the Samurai team went through. Andy carter in only his 2nd 7s
tournament, was named man of the tournament for the Samurai team. Lucas
Onyango the Kenyan 7s winger had electric pace all afternoon and Phil Read
showed he was starting to get back to his old self after a season of
playing very little Rugby.
The Travis Perkins 7s was being hailed by the organisers, North Walsham
RFC as a very strong tournament indeed. They were not wrong…………
Northampton with Ripol, Brooks, Hyndman and Schubert in the side.
Leicester Tigers with Steve Booth, Nick Baxter, John Holtby, Luke Myring
and
Ross Broadfoot participating.
Saracens who had Tony Roques and Darren O’Mahony leading an array of
talented youngsters.
Harlequins who had an array of talented U21s and Academy players that
could boast Kai Horstman, Chris Bell and Andrew Reay in their ranks.
The Samurai team was also a strong One but unlike most of the other sides
they were unable to have any training sessions prior to meeting up for the
tournament..
The whole team blended well from the start and the players 7s experience
told as they disposed of the UEA, Eastern Counties, Alumni, the Samurai
development team, where Jon Skurr, CT DuPlessis, Chris King, Andy Macrae
and in particular Jonny Barratt all performed very well, on their way to
the final.
In the final they faced a Harlequins team that had improved immensely with
every game during the afternoon. Both teams treated the large crowd to a
great final.
The Samurai took a 21 – 0 lead after 8 minutes with converted tries from
Cattle, Earnshaw and Feeley. Then they took their foot of the gas and
Quins hit back through Bell and James to make it 21 – 14 at half time.
Quins got off to a great start in the 2nd period as Horstman made it 21
apiece with all to play for.
Quins were denying Samurai possession and turned the ball over almost at
will for 3 or 4 minutes, until Gert de Kok showed great vision, skill and
pace to score a try out of nothing over in the far corner. 26 – 21 and all
to play for. Samurai won possession at the re-start and after some fine
handling Leigh Hinton showed his pace to take the score to 31 – 21. Quins
were not finished yet as excellent support play by Tom Guest saw him touch
down and make the score 31 – 26 with 2 minutes to go.
Samurai composed themselves and some more magic from Gert DeKok saw him
wrong foot several Quins defenders as he went over in the corner to make
it 36 – 26
Quins never gave up but with seconds left Cattle won the ball from a
scrum, kicked for touch and the game was over.
A great tournament with 2 good teams in a pulsating final and 3 from 3 for
Samurai.
Team= Jim Jenner (Capt). Russell Earnshaw, Nick Easter, Ben Lewitt, Gavin
Cattle, Gert DeKok, Vessels Wolmerans, Leigh Hinton, John Feeley, Mike
Roberts.
